Born and raised in NJ, Halloween has always been an exciting time of
year for me. As a young kid, I remember trick or treating, rain or shine.
But the Halloween season always started early for me and my family.
We would put up our decorations, usually a pumpkin, some cob webs, a
couple tombstones and a small wooden coffin which my father made for
us. One year while walking through the woods nearby I came across two
sheets of styrofoam. Needless to say, that day I made my first tombstone
which is still on display in the front yard. Each year I became more
serious about Halloween and started my own Haunted Garage. It quickly
became a neighborhood favorite and continued to grow each year. In 2003
the Haunted Garage was shut down by the local fire department. It was
a big disappointment but I understood why it had to happen. The following
year with the help from my brother Matt, I decided to go all out with
the front yard. We hand carved all of our own tombstones and custom
made a cemetery fence and pillars. Once again we were back on the map
and children from all over starting showing up at our house on Halloween.
In 2006 the Union Leader newspaper exhibited a photo of me and the haunted
yard on their front page, giving us the acknowledgement we'd been looking
for. I decided that year to call it HAUNTED UNION.
Each year we come up with new ideas to scare the local children (and
adults) so this year make it a point to stop by Haunted Union and get
scared!
